Courtesy of Jeep Club Belgium, we received this overview of Jeep based participations to the Dakar 2012 rally, which is held from 01/01/2012 to 15/01/2012, and which will cross the countries of Argentina, Chile and Peru.
The Dakar
rally is a unique human exploit of which the history has been created in the
heart of some of the world’s most stunning deserts and belongs to the world of
the greatest sports challenges of our time. Both a motor race and an
orienteering challenge, the Dakar rally pits some of the world’s greatest long-
distance rally drivers against amateur competitors, for whom the race is often
the culmination of their dreams and who come to take up the challenge with
their motorcycles, quad bikes, cars and trucks. The challenge attracts
competitors of more than 50 nationalities, who are watched on television by
over a billion viewers in 190 countries.
In the 2012 Dakar three Jeep based teams have been registered:
Team 350 - Mark Racing - Mark McMillin, Jeep Grand Cherokee, link
To learn first, do a good job, and then come back to win He is something of a motor racing star on the other side of the Atlantic. Four-time winner of the Baja 1000, Mark McMillin is making his Dakar debut. The humble 55-year old American will be behind the wheel of his Jeep Grand Cherokee, in the Open Class and he is no idea what to expect. He hopes to learn, take it all in and then comeback and win it. As always, Mark will count on the support of his successful clan (8 wins on the Baja 1000) and the presence of long-time co-driver Gary Arnold and his oldest son Daniel.
Team 393 - Go2Dakar - Willem Kien, Jeep Wrangler, link
We have a lot to learn Time for the big leap. After coming to the start of the Dakar with a press car back in 2008, Willem Kien will be discovering the race for the first time. In a Jeep Wrangler he completely rebuilt, the Dutchman and his “problem solving” co-driver Jos Schotanus have a long term plan on the Dakar. For this first attempt they just hope to finish and enjoy the rally in what they consider as being a good and fun amateur car to drive.
Team 454 - Santorelli Competicion - Miguel Santorelli, Jeep Wrangler proto, link
Nuestro vehículo no es estético pero si muy práctico Finalmente se lanza. No es por ambición. Ni por pasar simplemente un rato agradable en un medio que le gusta. Miguel Santorelli lo hace porque el año pasado vio que, gente como él, sin muchos recursos y con máquinas pequeñas o muy sencillas lo vivían y se encontraban bien. Así que él vio que también podía realizar su sueño. Lo que más le impresionó fue lo que vio en Arica, hasta donde había seguido la carrera, para conocer, y, tal vez, ayudar a sus amigos Perone y González. Hasta allí había llegado un competidor español con una moto de 250 cc. En ese momento, decidió que la hora había llegado también para él y que podía construir su buggy. El equipo que conforma con Daniel Crova, su amigo y mecánico, se apoya en un prototipo totalmente artesanal, construido por dos amantes del motor que han privilegiado el ingenio y las buenas ideas. Miguel dice que su máquina es rústica, de plástico, hecha a mano. Para este prototipo, concebido con los sentimientos, han utilizado la experiencia de la fórmula Safari, el rally provincial en el cual Daniel ha puesto a punto muchas camionetas y por el cual Miguel ha corrido más de diez años. Saben que hacen parte de los más modestos del Dakar. Saben también que, finalmente así, mantienen el espíritu original. Muy implicados en su proyecto sienten mucha presión. Pero, a la vez, tienen fe en su capacidad de rookie, siempre ingeniosos para saber cómo llegar.
